Second brawl sparks safety fears on popular Melbourne street
Residents on a popular Melbourne street say violence, not hoons, is now the biggest danger facing the neighbourhood.
Violence on Lygon Street has continued with a teenager’s birthday party turning into a wild brawl that spiralled out of control for an hour.
More than 20 people were involved in the first with chairs and tables hurled, fists thrown and patrons put in headlocks, all in front of shocked onlookers.
“One of them got thrown onto a car parked out the front of the restaurant,” witness Felix Berger-O’Neil said.
The brawl ended up rolling along the streets of Brunswick before police arrived.
The fight started after a group celebrating an 18th birthday party spilled out of a bar into Lygon Street on Friday night.
A window to a fast food outlet was smashed while other terrified traders were left to clean up the damage.
“You don’t want to get involved. You don’t want to break it up. You might get hurt,” bystander Agron Tairi said.
“There’s not much you can do really.”
Just last month police were called in to break up another large group fighting in the street and throwing furniture.
Police went to Friday night’s brawl but say no formal complaints have been made.
One man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
