Motorbike riders sent flying during horrific crash in Melbourne

A quiet Sunday motorbike ride was quickly turned upside down for two motorbike riders who were sent cartwheeling into the air during a horrific crash outside a Melbourne petrol station.

Steve Caruana and his friend Mark were travelling along Maribyrnong’s Raleigh Road on Sunday afternoon when a car suddenly pulled out in front of them.

Mr Caruana said he didn't have enough time to avoid an accident.

"I do remember hitting the car," he told 7 News. "'Uh oh... here we go', just flying through the air, hitting the ground. Sort of went blank after that."

The crash was caught on several cameras, including a dash cam, and shows the men sailing over the top of the vehicle before slamming into the ground further down the road.

Mark was thrown into a pole, causing him to break his leg.

"We are hurt and banged up and that, but it could have been a lot worse," Mr Caruana said. "A lot worse. So we're very lucky."

He escaped with heavy bruising but miraculously no fractures.

At the scene, onlookers rushed to help the two riders who were clearly in pain before they were transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A witness told 3AW she watched on in shock while driving with her family along Raleigh Road.

“I only saw the one rider, he was so high in the air above the big car next to us,” she said.

“When he landed I was waiting for him to start moving.

“We were just staring… processing what happened.”

The 23-year-old driver had just pulled out of a church and was attempting a right turn onto the road.

Mr Caruana said he was fed up with motorists driving recklessly around motorbikes.

"I've been riding the last 20 years. I always come close to accidents where people are turning in on you, cutting you off, just people are in too much of a rush these days," he said.

It is unclear whether the driver has been charged over the incident.
