Schoolboy injured in explosion thanks stranger who saved his life

Three weeks ago, 15-year-old Winston Lay was clinging to life in hospital after being hit with fiery debris from an explosion in Sydney’s west.

Winston was walking through the car park of Fairfield RSL when a gas bottle in a nearby car exploded after the driver lit up a cigarette.

The schoolboy was struck in the face and neck by flying shrapnel and was left lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Andrew Magro, a complete stranger to the teen, dragged Winston away from the flames and used a towel to stem the bleeding.

“And I said, ‘Winston are you okay mate?’ and he nodded,” Mr Magro told 7 News. “Well, if he’s nodding he’s alive.”

Doctors said that without that initial first aid there could’ve been a very different outcome

Winston came face-to-face with his Good Samaritan on Saturday and was able to thank him for the first time since the night of the accident.

“There should be more people like him because he has a lot of courage,” Winston told 7 News. “To actually help someone that needed help.”

Winston’s mum, Kim, also thanked the kind-hearted stranger for saving her son’s life.

While he has made remarkable progress, Winston still has a long way to go on the road to recovery.

Next year he will undergo further plastic surgery to repair the scarring on his face, but for now he is preparing to return to school.

The driver of the car also suffered serious burns in the explosion and was taken to the burns unit at Concord hospital in a stable condition.
