Horror on Australian roads, multiple deaths recorded in recent days

Two Queensland teenage boys are fighting for their lives after their car crashed into a power pole near Brisbane.

Witnesses say they may have been involved in a high speed drag race when the driver lost control.

A mangled mess is all that remains of the car that was carrying two young men.

Pirkko Sappala, a local resident told 7 News, “Someone was speeding I don't know which car but right before the bang I hear acceleration.”

“They had to break the car window to get the young boy out of there he was unconscious.”

It's believed the 19-year-old driver was overtaking another vehicle on Kingston Road at Waterford when he lost control smashing into a power pole.

Police are investigating witness accounts they were drag racing.

The horror smash came just hours after a grandmother was killed in a high speed crash at Hervey Bay.

72-year-old Janet Tucker had been on her way to bingo when a 21-year-old driver slammed into her car.

The dangerous drive had just taken out a phone box at high speed not long after police had tried to stop him.

Police however didn’t give chase.

Steve Spalding RACQ spokesperson told 7 News, “There are many high risks of fast moving pursuits and that's why we understand that police are very cautious about having a pursuit.”

Safe driving advocate Bobbie Henry lost her daughter in high speed car accident and she believes it's time to review the `no pursuit' policy.

“It's really tying the police hands those people are 90 percent of the time getting away with it and they're going to break the law again,” Henry a CARS spokesperson told 7 News.

The 21-year-old has been charged with dangerous driving causing death.

It was the second fatal crash on Queensland roads in 24 hours.

A motorbike rider died after his vehicle and a campervan collided in Queensland.

The 60-year-old man from Tin Can Bay, north of the Sunshine Coast, died at the scene on Saturday morning.

The driver of the campervan, a 22-year-old woman from the Netherlands, was airlifted to a Brisbane hospital for treatment.

In other states the carnage on the road has continued with four dead in NSW since Thursday, six in Victoria and dozens of accidents dotted around Sydney.
