Thieves steal homeless woman's last possessions in machete attack

A homeless woman living in her car with her two dogs had the windows of her vehicle smashed and the last of her possessions stolen during a violent robbery in north-west Melbourne.

Two thieves allegedly broke her windows with a machete, and used the same weapon to beat her up.

“They were screaming at me with a machete in my face, saying ‘give it to me, give it to me’ and I was like ‘well, I don't have anything, I'm homeless, I've got nothing,’” the woman, identified only as Chelsea, tearfully told 7 News.

The 26-year-old Melbourne woman had been living in a carpark at Keilor Park Reserve for the past six weeks.

Her two dogs were in the boot of the car chained up and unable to assist her during the assault.

“They've taken my handbag, which only had make-up and baby wipes and stuff in there,” Chelsea said.

Police said the offenders fled Keilor Park in a red hatchback with no registration plates.

They are investigating if one of the accused was also responsible for an armed robbery at a hillside service station earlier in the night.

The man threatened the attendant with a similar looking machete before demanding the contents of the till and cigarettes.

Detective Senior Constable Chris Morrison said anyone with information should come forward.

“Police are appealing for witnesses in this case as well, anyone with any information or knowledge of this crime to contact Crimestoppers,” he said.

The service station was robbed at 12:45am on Friday. Over two hours later and just 14 kilometres away, Chelsea was attacked.

She has been on the public housing list for eight months, and while crisis accommodation is available, she can only stay there if she gives her two dogs to the pound.

“I couldn't get rid of my best friends,” she said.

“Because nobody else has been there for me but them.”
