Only last week another carjacking occurred in south east Queensland.

A man crashed a sedan into an oncoming semi-trailer seconds after he stole it from a woman at knifepoint.

The 46-year-old man was a passenger in the vehicle when he pulled a knife on the female driver and demanded she get out in Carole park, Ipswich, following a heated argument.

The couple were seen in the car driving along Johnson road towards Cobalt Street before the man forced the woman out of the car and drove off.

Within 300 metres, the sedan was overtaking another car around a corner and speeding straight into the path of an oncoming semi-trailer.

The Holden Commodore became a twisted wreck after its wheels were scattered along the street, indicating that the driver reached high speeds very quickly, police said.

The man was trapped in the wreckage as the engine inside the mangled wreck caught fire.

Nearby factory workers rushed to help, dragging him from the car and carrying out basic first aid until paramedics arrived, police said.

Pieces of the truck were thrown more than 50 metres up the road, with police saying the one saving grace was that the rig was big enough to absorb most of the impact.

The 28-year-old woman who was forced from the car has since been interviewed by police.
