"The fear was in people's eyes I could see it and I thought you know what, no one is doing nothing. I'm going to react,” he told 7 News.

The confrontation occurred after the 19-year-old woman started racially abusing a man who sat next to her on a train travelling between Campsie and Canterbury Railway Stations.

Things went from bad to worse when the woman pulled out a chisel right in front of a child and threatened to stab the male passenger.

It was then that Tarek stepped in, pushed the woman down onto a seat and pulled the chisel from her hand.

While the move caused the woman to fall onto a young girl, it meant she was no longer armed with a deadly weapon.

Tarek then ordered the woman off the train, which had just pulled up at Canterbury station.

Tarek, who isn’t claiming to be a hero, says he is just a reformed criminal who learnt how to protect himself in jail.

“I just did a bit of UFC on her,” he told 7 News.

His courageous actions, even surprised his dad.

"I think he is paying back to the public, that he is a good person, that he is doing a good thing," his father told 7 News.

The 19-year-old woman has been charged with being armed with intent to commit indictable offence and common assault.

Her boyfriend claims she was only carrying the chisel because she was going to fix a relative’s door.

The woman has been granted conditional bail to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court in February.
