Four-year-old killed in horror car crash on Bruxner Highway

A four-year-old girl has been killed and a two-year-old girl is in a critical condition after a crash on the Bruxner Highway.

Motorists are advised to avoid the Bruxner Highway, east of Casino, following a fatal car crash.

About 1.20pm today police were called to the Bruxner Highway near Irvington Wharf Road, about 10km east of Casino, following reports of a serious car crash.

Initial inquiries suggest two vehicles collided, with one vehicle splitting in two as a result of the impact.

An 18-year-old woman who was driving one of the vehicles has been taken to Lismore Base Hospital with spinal injuries. She had three passenger, all young girls, in the car at the time.

A young female died at the scene, while a second young girl was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment and remains in a critical condition.

The third passenger, an eight-year-old girl was taken to Lismore Base Hospital with minor injuries.

The elderly male driver and sole occupant of the second vehicle was not injured and has been taken to Hospital for observation.

Officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit with the assistance of local police are investigating the incident.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes where possible.

This fatality is the first since Operation ‘Arrive Alive’ was launched less than 24 hours ago.

“It’s an absolute tragedy that someone so young has been lost today,” said Traffic and Highway Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner John Hartley.

“With the increase of traffic on the road over the holiday period I am appealing to road users to drive safely and be vigilant when travelling,” he said.

The exact ages of all those involved is yet to be determined.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
