Baby gets second-degree burns at childcare
A Brisbane mother wants answers after her toddler came home from childcare with second-degree burns.
The Education Department could take action following a police investigation.
Photographs show Sophia Zhang’s son Leon after he took a drink of water.
It burnt his throat, lips, chin and chest.
She said she could hear him “crying and screaming” before she entered the room he was in at Little Totts childcare centre in Calamvale.
It took two hours for her to be told her son had been hurt, she said.
"They didn't apply appropriate first aid and they didn't call ambulance and they didn't call mum," said Ms Zhang.
A doctor at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital diagnosed the 15-month-old with second degree burns.
Leon is recovering well but his mother wants answers.
Pointing to his little blue drinking cup she says: “They told me this lid was tightly on and there was warm water.
“I still don't understand, how did he get access to hot water? How did he get burnt? I haven't been told the truth."
After a week-long investigation, police said no charges will be laid because the incident doesn't amount to criminal negligence and it was an accident.
The Education Department is investigating whether the centre has breached regulations.
A spokesperson for the business said it was "an unfortunate situation" and "the centre is concerned for the child".
Leon is now being cared for at home.
