Hail and heavy rain hit parts of Sydney and Central Coast

Large hail has hit parts of Sydney and the Central Coast after residents were warned brace for a freak storm this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned large hailstones, heavy rain and damaging winds were likely to hit the Hunter, Sydney metro and parts of the mid north coast.

Flights from Sydney have been affected due to the severe weather. Passengers have been made aware of delays.

Residents were quick to share video and photos of the storm hitting their patch.

30mm was dumped on Blackton and Baulkham Hills within half an hour.

At 2:30 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Blacktown and Erskine Park. These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast. They are forecast to affect Parramatta, Pennant Hills and Riverstone by 3:00 pm and Hornsby, Richmond and Terrey Hills by 3:30 pm.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours,” a statement warned.

EARLIER: Locations which may be affected include Taree, Newcastle, Wyong, Gosford, Scone, Cessnock, Maitland, Sydney, Penrith, Parramatta and Campbelltown.

The State Emergency Service warned people should be working to prepare themselves.

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on 132 500.

The storm comes only days after a spectacular storm cloud moved across Sydney's eastern suburbs.
