The world first treatment fighting the symptoms of dengue fever

Queensland researchers have discovered a world first Dengue treatment that can halt symptoms like fever, severe headaches, and internal bleeding.

Virus experts from the University of Queensland found that by ‘retooling’ existing drugs being used to fight toxic shock, they can then be used to attack Dengue.

Dengue fever infects more than 1500 Australians every year, killing up to 25 thousand people across the globe.

Professor Paul Young says it’s a very debilitating disease.

“Over two weeks of high fever very, very sore muscles and joint pain in particular and headaches,” he told Seven News.

There is currently no cure or vaccine that can halt the symptoms, until now.

"Early diagnosis will allow us a window of opportunity to treat and prevent progression to severe disease," Professor Young said.

Spraying programs and Queensland trials to breed out the virus in the Aegypti Mozzie are also proving successful.
