The terrifying moment when a lone man charged at a car on a darkened road has been captured on a dash cam.

Video shows a strange looking man in a grey hoodie, standing next to a vehicle, which has been parked across the middle of a quiet road.

When the driver with the dash cam is forced to slow down, the man on the road charges at him and screams.

This terrifying nightmare was experienced by multiple motorists who were travelling just outside of Cessnock early on Sunday morning.

The driver in the video was travelling along Lake Road near Kearsley when he approached the Kearsley Selections Road about 1.30am. It was then that he spotted a four-wheel drive blocking the intersection and the man standing next to it.

In the video, the motorist slows as the man approaches, before turning his head away.

When the car has nearly come to a stand still, the man lunges and yells and the motorist who speeds off into the distance.

The man then unsuccessfully tried to call his wife who was travelling with a girlfriend in another vehicle, which was only about a minute behind.

The pair also encountered the same horrifying incident.

"I almost stopped before I could go around this guy, and as we went past he just lunged at our door," the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Fairfax Media.

"We still don't know what he was trying to do, whether he was trying to rob us, was he trying to take our car or was he trying to hurt us.

The couple are concerned about what the man may have tried to do to other people and whether he would try it again.

"For starters, we need to find out what the bloke's intentions were, whether he might even have mental health issues," the woman said.

Central Hunter duty officer Inspector Greg Lindsell told Fairfax Media police had seen the footage and identified a man who was located living in bushland at nearby Elrington.

He was arrested on Sunday afternoon after police had allegedly seized drugs in the bush.

Inspector Lindsell said while the video was horrifying, he did not think it was an attempted carjacking. He said no charges would be laid regarding the traffic incident.

The video of the frightening and eerie experience has since gone viral on social media.
