Kowen Forest hazard reduction burn contained after high winds

A hazard reduction burn at Kowen Forest to Canberra's east that had spread due to high winds has been brought under control.

The fire jumped containment lines north of the Kings Highway on Monday evening.

The ACT Rural Fire Service responded and 12 fire units and three bulldozers worked to construct containment lines.

Emergency Services Agency commissioner Dominic Lane said the blaze burned about six hectares and kept crews busy overnight.

"I suppose it's an ominous start to the season, when those winds come through, [that's] what can happen," he said.

He said crews would continue to patrol the area after extinguishing hot spots.
