Gunman dies in Queensland car crash

A gunman wanted for brandishing a rifle near Mackay has died in a high-speed crash.

The 25-year-old died when his car ran off the Bruce Highway near Home Hill, north of Mackay, on Thursday.

Police believe he was a gunman they'd been hunting since Tuesday night, when a man was seen brandishing a rifle outside a home at Slade Point, near Mackay.

Home Hill Senior Constable Greg Langford said speed was a factor in the crash.

"The vehicle has left the highway, crossed the railway line and the driver of the vehicle has been ejected," he told The Courier-Mail.

"From the length of the accident scene and the damage to the vehicle, I would suggest speed is involved."

Police could not immediately confirm reports the rifle was found in the car.
