Call for crackdown on internet-based drug trafficking

South Australia's Attorney-General has called on the Federal Government to put more effort into intercepting drugs that come through the post.

John Rau will raise the issue at the national meeting of the Law, Crime and Community Safety Council in Melbourne.

He said internet-based drug trafficking had increased and the substances were entering the community through the domestic mail system.

"The Federal Government must do more when it comes to drug detection," Mr Rau said.

"Internet-based illicit drug trafficking is increasing and these substances are commonly entering our community largely through the domestic mail system."

The call comes after police intercepted parcels containing more than 10,000 tabs of a drug known as wizard, as well as $400,000 worth of methamphetamine delivered to addresses in Adelaide over the past week.

SA police arrest 49 under Operation POST

Mr Rau said the arrests were part of Operation POST, a targeted inter-agency response set up in South Australia at the beginning of the year.

He said 49 people had been arrested and almost 30 kilograms of illicit drugs had been seized since then and he would like to see the operation taken up at a national level.

"If we are having, as our police are telling us, a serious threat to our community in the form of highly manufactured drugs coming into the country through the post, it's pretty important we have the cooperation and assistance of federal agencies," he said.

"What we need nationally is a more targeted and innovate inter agency response to this issue.

"We also need stronger border security especially for postal items."
