Bay to Birdwood Run: Vintage cars take part in 70km journey

About 1,000 vintage and veteran vehicles have taken part in Adelaide's Bay to Birdwood Run.

The event was open to classic cars, trucks and motorbikes made before 1956, with a special focus this year on military motoring and Dodge cars.

The run weaves its way across 70 kilometres from the West Beach foreshore to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills.

Bay to Birdwood chairman Martin Haese said despite the windy conditions thousands of people lined the route.

He said the event's popularity was about more than just the cars.

"South Australia has a long motoring history," Mr Haese said.

"I think that's why the Bay to Birdwood has been so popular, but also the Bay to Birdwood is as much about cars as it is about community.

"People just love to come out and see these old cars which typically you don't see on the street very often and here they are all in one place and it's a great spectacle."

Vintage motor enthusiast Reg, who owns a 1951 Bentley, said he had been taking part in the event for 16 years.

"You can get a lot of knowledge about various cars," he said.

"Some of them are quite rare and this is the only time you'll ever see that kind of car."
