Central Queensland gunman: Shots fired near Rockhampton amid search for Adin Joel Cussen

Police in bulletproof vests have gone into an area south-west of Rockhampton in central Queensland where shots have been fired by a dangerous gunman.

Adin Joel Cussen, 29, has been on the run since Wednesday when it is alleged he fired two shots at officers with a bolt-action rifle after they tried to intercept his car on the Burnett Highway.

About 2:00pm (AEST) more shots were fired in the Laiden Hills area and firefighters and two residents were evacuated.

The Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) from Brisbane, tactical officers and 15 detectives have all been involved in the search for Cussen, who was still armed with a bolt-action rifle.

Police spoke with Cussen's mother earlier today as part of efforts to find him.

Inspector Shadlow said police had widened the search for Cussen.

"He is considered armed and dangerous. Members of the public are asked not to approach him and to call triple-0 immediately if he is sighted," he said.

Firefighters battled a blaze at Mount Morgan, which was believed to have been lit by Cussen while he evaded police yesterday.

At least one shed had been on fire and a home had been under threat after the blaze jumped containment lines, fanned by strong winds.

Emergency crews have now brought the fire under control.
