NT Police vehicles crash into each other responding to call

Two Northern Territory police vehicles have been damaged after they crashed into each other while responding to an emergency call in Darwin's rural area.

An officer has been treated for minor head injuries and two others involved in the crash were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for observation.

Watch Commander Geoff Bahnert said an unmarked police car and a marked police van crashed in Virginia about 3:00am.

"Unfortunately they made contact while they were turning into the road they were driving into and caused both vehicles to run off the road and end up in a ditch on the side of the road," he said.

"One was travelling behind and as one vehicle turned, the other one was too close and T-boned the other vehicle unfortunately."

He said a shift supervisor was driving alone in the unmarked car and the marked police van had three officers onboard.

"We had two of our constables and a Papua New Guinea observer, there's six of them here observing how we do business," Watch Commander Bahnert said.

"Two persons were kept in hospital for observation. They've had CT scans, both have been cleared.

"One of the police members has a cut to his forehead, but he's OK. He's getting tonight's shift off as a precaution, the other members will be returning to duty tonight."

Major Crash Unit investigators have measured up the crash site.

Watch Commander Bahnert said police will check whether training protocols were followed but disciplinary action is unlikely.

"There is a possibility. Obviously if you operate outside the policy or outside the law there is always a chance of discipline, but at this time nothing has been identified."
