Sydney man charged with animal cruelty

A man has been charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly threw his dog into a manhole and bombarded it with insecticide bombs before closing the lid.

Police arrested the 34-year-old Rozelle man on Wednesday after being alerted to the attack.

RSPCA, Fire & Rescue NSW officers and police found the 12-year-old whippet in a manhole in the backyard of a home on Mansfield Street.

The man was arrested at the scene.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Balmain Local Court on October 1.

The dog was taken to a vet for treatment, and is in the care of the RSPCA.

Police have been told the dog did not suffer permanent injuries.
