Alleged West Perth rent fraudster charged

A 34-year-old Perth man has been charged after he allegedly conned international tourists into paying rent for apartments he didn't own or have authority to lease.

Police say the man used at least 10 aliases on websites advertising units for rent in West Perth over the past year.

His victims paid him four weeks rent as a security bond and two weeks rent in advance.

He was not authorised to rent the units, police said.

They say he pocketed $30,000 from the scam, which mostly targeted international visitors.

Police have so far identified eight victims.

The man has been charged with 10 counts of gains benefit by fraud, seven counts of forgery and three counts of stealing.

He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.
