Vic one-punch teen in induced coma

A Melbourne teenager who dreamed of playing professional soccer is fighting for his life after being punched during a wild party in Melbourne's eastern suburbs over the weekend.

Jaiden, 15, was allegedly punched in the head outside a community hall in Bayswater, where around 100 party goers and gatecrashers had converged on Saturday night.

Police say there were a number of fights inside the property and spilling onto the street.

"A witness has told police that he saw the boy walking away from the crowd, along the footpath, when he was struck by a youth running past him," police said on Monday.

"(He) was knocked to the ground as a result of the blow and struck his head on the footpath."

Paramedics treated Jaiden, who is from Carrum Downs, at the scene.

He was released into the care of his mother, Karyn, but his health deteriorated and he was taken to a nearby hospital.

The teenager was later transferred to the Royal Children's Hospital, and placed in an induced coma.

Today, his mother made an emotional plea for her son's attacker(s) to turn themselves in.

"My son, who had the world at his feet, and now he's got a long road ahead to get back to where he was," she said.

"Young people need to know that this is not on. People are getting hurt for nothing."

Jaiden had been to an event, organised via Facebook.

Organisers had a list of rules, including no fighting, no weapons, and a warning to trouble makers - they would be kicked out.

Yesterday morning, Jaiden's teammates from the under 16 Bentleigh Greens Soccer team held a minute's silence for their popular captain.

Police and the family are now calling on witnesses to help identify Jaiden's attacker.

The incident comes just days after the Victorian government announced it would introduce mandatory 10-year jail terms for perpetrators of one-punch attacks that result in a death.
