Massive truck blitz on Sydney roads

A truck with no brakes was pulled off the road in Western Sydney during a safety blitz on one of city’s busiest motorways.

The crackdown was ordered after yesterday's truck crash in the M5 East tunnel, which caused hours of gridlock.

Operation Eli was supposed to take place next month – but that was before yesterday’s M5 Tunnel chaos, which saw a tip truck smash the roof, causing hours of chaos.

Of 81 trucks inspected, half were issued with offences and a quarter were found to be defected.

One truck even had no brakes – and police and the Roads and Maritime Services are not ruling out further operations like this before Christmas.

“We brought it forward to today so we could try to educate the wider driver population,” said Stuart Smith, of the Highway Patrol.

The truck stuck in the M5 tunnel yesterday has also had its rego cancelled.
