Man arrested over cold case SA murder

South Australian Police have arrested a man over the cold case murder of teenager Karen Williams, who was last seen in 1990.

The 42-year-old man was arrested at Mt Gambier by Major Crime detectives this afternoon.

Karen Williams was 16 years old when she disappeared in 1990, last seen in the early hours of August 4.

In July, new lines of inquiry led police to excavate and search mine shafts in Coober Pedy, but no remains were found.

Police said they would now return to the town for another search.

Deputy Commissioner Grant Stevens said even without any remains, police had enough evidence to progress with the case.

The investigation is continuing with police renewing calls for help finding a Datsun 180B with registration SLG-539 they believe is connected to the case.

They said the vehicle could still be in use and there was a possibility forensic material could still be in the vehicle.
