Council defends parking inspectors in no go zones

The Adelaide City Council has defended parking inspectors caught leaving their cars in no parking zones, saying they have an exemption, but motorists say it is still not a good look.

Video on Youtube shows a parking inspector leaving his car in a no-stopping zone in Adelaide’s Gawler Place while he and another sticker licker do their rounds.

The same vehicle was later spotted again parked in Gawler Place, with the two inspectors returning to the car and driving off, revealing a yellow line.

Today, 7News found a member of the public who had been fined $85 for parking in the same no stopping zone.

“I think it is pretty poor form actually,” the fined driver said.

“I think they’re out patrolling and giving out tickets they should have to stick to the rules as well.”

The Adelaide City Council insists its inspectors did nothing wrong.

Like emergency services, they have an exemption to park where others cannot.

The council dished out more than 240,000 fines last financial year, raking in over $13 million, and critics say while the inspectors are not breaking the law, it is not a good look.

“That’s wrong, they shouldn’t be doing that,” one person shown the video told 7News.

“If not allowed to park there then why should they be allowed to park there.”

“Sets a bad example,” another motorist told 7News.
