Koala stolen from Adelaide widow

Heartless thieves have stolen an injured koala from a grieving widow’s backyard in Adelaide.

Rae Campbell had been nursing it back to health for four years, but now fears it won’t survive.

For 51 years, she had shared a love of koalas with her husband Warren, before he died unexpectedly two weeks ago.

This morning, she woke to find her world turned upside down again after a thief stole Kao the koala from the backyard of her Trott Park home.

The cage she remembers locking last night is still secure, but Kao is gone.

Rae’s life is rescuing koalas.

“They were all special, but because she had been so ill...” Rae told 7News.

She looked after Kao straight from the pouch after Kao’s mother was hit and killed by a car.

“If somebody gives her the wrong leaves or doesn’t know what to do, she will die,” Rae said.

Kao’s big claim to fame was a meeting with Prince Charles and Camilla when they visited Adelaide last year.

While police are on the hunt, Rae said if the koala is returned to the cage chained to a tree out the front of her house, there will be no questions asked.
