An elderly woman is in a critical condition after being pulled from a burning house in Adelaide.

Fire crews were called to the blaze on Falcon Ave at Mile End at about 11.30pm yesterday and took about an hour to extinguish the blaze.

They say the fire was most likely caused by someone smoking a cigarette in bed.

The injured woman, 72, was rescued from the home by firefighters and received burns to about half her body.

She remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Damage to the home has been estimated at $60,000.

Meanwhile, police suspect a house fire earlier in the night at Wynn Vale in Adelaide’s north was deliberately lit.

Police and fire crews were called to the Palomino Parade just after 9pm yesterday.

Investigators believe someone broke through the rear door of the home before lighting a fire inside.

The owners were on holiday in Queensland at the time and no one was injured in the blaze.
