More SA Health jobs set to go

Another 124 jobs will be cut from SA Health, on top of the 350 job cuts announced last month.

SA Health says the redundancies will only be offered to administration and management positions, and insists patient care will not be compromised.

Chief Executive Officer David Swan said the latest round of cuts will save about $10million a year.

"We have identified that around 124 positions we will be able to formally offer voluntary separation packages over the next one to two months, with a view that they will be leaving the public sector by the end of this financial year," he said.

"It doesn’t involve any staff member that is providing direct patient care.

“We are always looking for opportunities to run our system efficiently; we will continue to look for opportunities.”

While the measure is another attempt to reign in the ballooning health budget, the Opposition seems more concerned with how many workers have actually offered to take a redundancy.

“Clearly, morale in the Health Department is low if so many employees have put their hand up to leave,” Shadow Health Minister Steven Marshall said.

“600 applicants, people lining up saying ‘pick me, pick me, I want to leave the health department’.

“600 applicants for 124 positions – something’s going on in the health department.”
