Bridge problems delay Endeavour

A replica of Captain Cook's ship Endeavour, has been delayed by bridge failures, after it was supposed to berth at McLaren Wharf at Port Adelaide by 11 am.

The 'Diver' Derrick road bridge, over the Port River opened, but the next rail bridge refused to open.

Then, both bridges were closed.

It then took a couple of hours for both bridges to be opened at the same time, so the ship could pass through.

The mishap left traffic on the Port River Expressway banked up, and meant visitors at the McLaren Wharf were left waiting.

Further troubles ensued when the Endeavour, which is owned by the Australian National Maritime Museum, was then supposed to be welcomed by shore based canons which also had troubles operating, initially unable to fire.

The Endeavour's trip to Adelaide is part of the ship's 13-month journey around Australia.

Adelaide is the ship's 14th port-of-call.
