South Australian police say mystery still surrounds bones found in the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens, in the Adelaide Hills.

Last Wednesday a human leg bone was found in some garden loam, a soil mix taken from Mount Lofty, to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

It was found by workers who were spreading the mix over the gardens in the city.

Police and SES officers had been searching through the soil at Mount Lofty and today found a second human leg bone.

"So we're sifting through the remaining soil to see if there are any remaining bones," Det Sgt Malcolm Williams said.

Crews are now hoping to determine the origin of the bones.

"We're talking 20 to 200 years old," Det Sgt Williams said, "We'll continue to sift through all the soil, to see if we can recover as much of the skeletal remains as possible."

"It could well be an early settler."
