The painting was declared authentic in 2011, but a recent study has raised question about why the orb is see-through with no distorted light.

“Solid glass or crystal, whether shaped like an orb or a lens, produces magnified, inverted, and reversed images," writer Walter Isaacson told The Guardian.

"Instead, Leonardo painted the orb as if it were a hollow glass bubble that does not refract or distort the light passing through it.”

He said at the time Da Vinci did the painting, he was "obsessing" over his studies of light refraction.

Mr Issacson said the artist had a notebook full of drawings of light bouncing off surfaces.

He said he could not be "absolutely sure" the painting is authentic.

This comes after ArtWatch UK director Michael Daley described the Salvator Mundi as "deadpan" and "uncharacteristically cropped."

A spokesperson from the auction house said: “Leonardo’s paintings are known for their mystery and ambiguity".
