Man charged over fatal Werribee crash

A 27-year-old man has been charged with culpable driving after a horror smash which killed a teenager and seriously injured two others.

Laura Hallinan, 19, of Hoppers Crossing, died when the car she was travelling in as a back seat passenger struck safety railing at the intersection of Diggers and Whites Roads at Werribee and ploughed into a tree on Thursday night.

Ms Hallinan, who died at the scene, was one of seven passengers in the overloaded car.

Two men were airlifted to hospital while four other people in the car, including the Hoppers Crossing man charged, were taken to hospital by road ambulance.

Laura's mother, Cathy, spoke of her grief following the accident which claimed her daughter's life. She said she was at a loss to explain why her daughter would cram into a car.

"Laura didn't accept consequences, like a lot of teenagers they just don't think," she told 7News.

"She had a lot of potential and she could have gone on to a lot of things, but she just threw a lot of it away."

Paying tribute to her daughter, Cathy said Laura was popular, full of life, and always had bundles of energy.

Cathy spoke about Laura as tributes for the popular teen flooded into the social networking site Facebook.

Mourners also left wreaths and floral tributes at the scene of the crash.

Police are investigating whether alcohol and speed contributed to the crash.

The 27-year-old Hoppers Crossing man was charged this afternoon.

He was bailed to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, July 20.
