Smokey the cat breaks world record

She may look like an ordinary tabby, but Smokey the grey and white cat from Northampton has one extraordinary talent.

The ferocious feline has just purred her way into the Guinness book of World Records after being recorded at a whopping 67.7 decibels.

Smokey became an online sensation in February when her owner Ruth Adams began a competition to find the loudest purring domestic cat in her local area.

Smokey, of course, blew the competition away with a purr that would sound more like a flock of pigeons than a domestic cat.

With the help of a local British college, Smokey's purrs were recorded to the strict standards imposed by Guinness, who have now announced Smokey's entrance into the pantheon of legendary record breaking animals.

"Guinness World Records is a veritable cat-alogue of fantastic felines, and Smokey is a welcome addition to the family", Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, said, "It’s incredible to think that a cat’s purr can be as loud as a vacuum cleaner."

Ms Adams, speaking on Smokey's behalf, said the kitty is one proud pussy cat, “Smokey and I are very excited at being awarded the Guinness World Records title.”

According to Guinness, the loudest animals in the world are large whales, which have been recorded at 188 decibels (dB).

A lawnmower generally hits around 90 dB, car horn goes as high as 110 dB, and a rock concert will often reach an ear-splitting 120 dB.
