Woman regains consciousness after a month in induced coma

A WA woman who was hit by a car and thrown into the air has regained consciousness after being in an induced coma for a month.

Liz Gibson, 19 from Thornlie, was hit by a car when she crossed Warton Road, Canning Vale on June 13.

While she is still slowly recovering she recently regained consciousness.

Ms Gibson has suffered a broken collarbone and ribs along with internal bleeding but doctors also feared she may have suffered brain damage.

However, while her voice is still recovering, she’s started walking again with assistance.

On Tuesday she had a visitor who suffered a similar accident.

In 2015 Tayla Vann Cotte, 19, was thrown metres in the air when she was struck by a car trying to cross Albany Highway, Maddington.

She said she saw Ms Gibson’s accident and had to get in touch.

“I saw the Facebook page of Seven News and I immediately clicked on it and listened to her story,” she said.

Ms Vann Cotte spoke at Ms Gibson’s bedside during a visit and told her “she was proud of her” for recovering.

Ms Gibson’s father Dave is still asking for the driver who hit his daughter to come forward so he can offer forgiveness in person.

“Today, tomorrow, next year,” he said.

“The invitation is an open door.”
