Huge multi-vehicle pile-up during US dust storm

A highway in California was brought to a standstill when a huge multi-vehicle pile-up occurred as a dust storm swept through the region on Monday.

Traffic on the SB Highway 99 in Kern County was backed up for around two hours as emergency crews tended to the crash, which is believed to have involved 20 vehicles and blocked all lanes of traffic.

A lane and the right shoulder lane, were eventually reopened so that traffic could start moving.

The crash is believed to have occurred during a dust storm that hit the region.

"There have been some wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph (48 to 64km/h) just ahead of a cold front slicing southeastward into the Bakersfield area," senior meteorologist Nick Wiltgen told weather.com.

"We don't have a precise observation for the accident site, but a few locations to the southeast of Bakersfield have reported blowing dust at times."

Five people reportedly suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

This is far from the first time that video has captured a massive pile-up on a US highway.
