'Alien-like' light stirs debate online

Footage of an eerie light shining above a thunderstorm has captured the imagination of many and has gone viral.

In the video, filmed in Indiana in the US, the light can be seen shining from behind a black cloud.

The clip has been watched almost 1.7 million times and has stirred debate among believers and sceptics.

One Imgur user said: “Has something to do with rapid heating and cooling in that spot due to reflected light energy or different temp pressure fronts merging.”

But another was quick to add: “It’s clouds or aliens. I choose aliens. It’s my right.”

The phenomenon is caused by the weather, according to NASA.

The NASA website explains that lightning discharge in a thundercloud can temporarily change the electric field above the cloud, where charged ice crystals were reflect sunlight.

“The new electric field quickly re-orients the geometric crystals to a new orientation that reflects sunlight differently.”
