Mystery still surrounds the death of an Australian family in a car crash in Abu Dhabi and the desert kingdom’s police have yet to announce charges.

Sydney woman Michelle Lui's Strathfield was informed on February 23 that her mother, father, brother, sister-in-law and four-year-old nephew had been killed in a head-on car crash on February 21, Fairfax Media reported.

Bruce Liu, 71, Stella Liu, 68, their son Adrian Liu, 44, and his wife Fontaine Chan-Liu, 39 were killed in a car crash.

Abu Dhabi police have not confirmed if charges will be laid over the accident and this had lead to many speculate that it was either a powerful businessperson, a member of the Emirati elite or even someone from the UAE royal family involved in the crash.

The Liu family was on holiday in Dubai and were being driven to Abu Dhabi as part of a tour.

The family was on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi when a young man driving a sports utility vehicle crossed the centre line and crashed into the Lius' car at high speed, according to Mrs Lui’s lawyer Gregory Wee.

"The driver of the other car ... has survived," Mr Wee told Fairfax Media.

The official police report into the accident, which has was given to Mr Wee, did not point to any specific cause or person. Mr Wee said getting information from authorities had been difficult.

"It is all very suspicious and my client hasn't been able to access any information," he said.

The accident has not been reported in UAE media.
