Police say a fire, which appears to have killed a man in his 40s, was not suspicious.

The man’s body was discovered this morning in the shell of a burnt out caravan on a property near Meningie in South Australia’s Coorong region.

Emergency services were called to the area this morning after a neighbour raised the alarm.

Seven News understands the man had lived alone in the caravan for the past 10 years.

He worked in a local nursery and was well-known in the tight knit Meningie community.

Police say it is unclear when the fire started but they believe it could have been extinguished by heavy rain overnight.

Investigators scoured the area for much of this morning and this afternoon and do not believe the fire to be suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Due to the remote location, there were no witnesses and police were this afternoon still attempting to locate the man’s relatives.
