A man has died in hospital more than two weeks after he was hit by a car in an accident which also killed his partner.

49-year-old Gary Kelly had suffered critical injuries when a Holden Commodore ute allegedly mounted the kerb on Victoria Road at Rozelle on December 14, striking him and his 47-year-old partner.

Cathy Pracy died at the scene, while Mr Kelly was taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported 49-year-old Gary Kelly had been with Cathy Pracy for about two years and had moved to Australia from England.

A friend of the couple, James Bizon, told The Sydney Morning Herald the pair were much-loved and regarded by their friends, who are all devastated.

The P-plate driver who was charged with hitting and killing Cathy Pracy, now faces a further dangerous driving charge after her partner Gary Kelly passed away.

The 22-year-old driver allegedly tried to flee the scene of the crash on December 14 but was stopped and detained by witnesses.

Police said late on Thursday that following the death of the man on Wednesday the driver has had his charges upgraded to two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

Police said his previous charges of negligent driving occasioning death, and fail to stop and assist after impact causing death, remain.

He is next due to appear in court again on February 3.
