Huge overhaul of parking charges in Brisbane

A review of parking in Brisbane has recommended motorists get 15-minutes free parking in metered zones outside the CBD.

The freebie is one of 55 findings handed down by the Brisbane City Council’s Parking Taskforce on Monday.

It would apply to 7715 car spaces in the suburbs of Auchenflower, Milton, Petrie Terrace, Kelvin Grove, Spring Hill, West End, South Brisbane, Woolloongabba, Fortitude Valley, Teneriffe and Newstead.

The report said the move would cost council around $1.94 million a year.

The recommendations come after a six-month investigation, which looked at factors such as cost, availability, accessibility and convenience.

New parking signs could also be trialled; after concerns were raised the current system is too confusing.

The Taskforce was established by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk in June to try and eliminate the biggest parking issues in Brisbane.

It brought together a range of industry bodies representing motorists, schools, businesses, retailers and numerous other parties.
