Vic prison in lockdown after explosives scare

Explosives scare at Barwon Prison

A Victorian prison was sent into lockdown amid reports of a prisoner with an incendiary device strapped to himself making threats.

The 44-year-old “surrendered without incident” around 11.30am after Victoria Police had been negotiating with the inmate.

“Police will now assess a device that was located on the man,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Kelly Yates said.

“Members from the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) attended the scene with Bomb Response Unit members.”

The man surrendered and was returned to custody. His device is believed to have consisted of ground-up match heads and strapped to his body.

Prison officials said early on Friday that there was no immediate threat to staff or other prisoners.
