Japan's Uehara inks extension with Red Sox

Boston (AFP) - Japanese pitcher Koji Uehara has signed a two-year contract extension with the last-place Boston Red Sox, the Major League Baseball club announced.

No details were released, but US media reported on Thursday the deal is worth $18 million.

The 39-year-old Uehara won six of 11 games last season and had 25 saves.

Boston had 71 wins and 91 losses to finish in the fifth and final spot in the American League East Division. They placed 25 games back of first-place Baltimore.

Uehara has put together a 10-6 record and 1.75 ERA along with 47 saves in 137 contests over the last two seasons in Boston.
