Man dies in Qld ironman race

A Victorian man has died while competing in an ironman event on the Sunshine Coast.

The 39-year-old was pulled unconscious from the water around 7.30am (AEST) by a spectator.

Paramedics were called a short time later but the man died at the scene.

It’s believed his family had been attending the event.

Ironman Asia Pacific CEO Geoff Meyer says it was a tragic incident.

“It’s a very very sad day to be honest,” Mr Meyer said.

"I've been with the family all morning. We've been helping them as much as we possibly can."

The man suffered a suspected heart attack during the swim stage of the Ironman 70.3 event.

"Medical teams worked on the gentleman for over half an hour," he said.

"The team did an amazing job but were not able to revive him.

Mr Meyer said the race went on as per normal.
