Smoke alarm helps save Taylors Lakes fire couple

An elderly couple has narrowly escaped an early morning fire that destroyed their home after being alerted by a smoke alarm.

The blaze broke out at the Murchison Avenue home in the early hours of this morning.

The couple, in their 70s, did not try and fight the fire but fled their home after being alerted by a smoke alarm.

MFB investigators believe an electrical fault in an old radio caused the fire.

The entire rear of the property was destroyed by flames, with the remainder affected by smoke and water damage.

The damage bill is estimated to be between $250,000 and $300,000.
