Anger over fine for drunken assault

FIRST ON 7: A cowardly thug who knocked a woman's teeth out in a drunken nightclub attack has been let off with only a fine.

Earlier, in drawn out court proceedings, the one punch assault had been described as an act worthy of jail, but no conviction has been recorded in a decision that has left his victim dismayed.

What began as a night out celebrating with friends last October quickly turned ugly for Chloe Carr after an altercation with 28-year-old Liam Moody at CQ nightclub in Melbourne's CBD.

Ms Carr said: “We'd only been there for about 40 minutes and were at the bar just about to order our first drinks.”

Moments later, Chloe was on the ground after being punched in the face, which resulted in two of her teeth being knocked out and blood pouring down her dress.

Previously, she had asked Mr Moody to stop hassling one of her friends.

“He just raised his arm and punched me straight in the face on my left side.”

The coward punch put her in hospital and cost her $13,000 in reconstructive surgery.

After four months before the courts Liam Moody pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious injury. But, despite Magistrate John Doherty previously claiming he had displayed serious behaviour worthy of jail, Mr Moody walked free with a $1500 fine and no conviction against his name.

Campaigner Michelle Kleinart said: “He got away with violence. I'm disgusted, I'm apppalled, I'm saddened. It's just wrong.”

Mr Moody's lawyer says he is sorry and it would never have happened if his client was sober..

But Ms Carr insisted that '$1500 is a joke'.
