Car crashes through barrier on to Bondi Beach

Police say a crash at Bondi today could have been catastrophic.

A 90-year-old man is in hospital after his car ran off the road, along a footpath, through a park and landed on Bondi Beach.

Amazingly, no pedestrians were hurt after police were told the Pulsar Sedan, which was being driven along Lamrock Avenue, veered across to the western footpath in Campbell Parade and travelled about 20 metres along the footpath, hitting chairs and tables outside a café.

The vehicle then hit several street signs before crossing Campbell Parade onto the eastern footpath where it then travelled about 60m down an embankment in Bondi Park before continuing through a barrier onto the promenade, then onto the sand.

Emergency services were called to the scene responding to reports the man was unconscious.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to St Vincent’s Hospital.

Police believe he may have suffered a seizure.

Shocked witnesses watched as the vehicle crashed down a hill towards the beach.

Shopper Dale Hutson said: "I decided to jump left and luckily because he went right and veered across the road.

"A car has wiped out a shop, ATM & headed down South Bondi hill, over the prom, to stop 15m onto the sand. Hectic! Hope the old guy is ok" wrote witness Corey Oliver on Twitter.
