New injury woe for world champ Tamgho

Paris (AFP) - France's world triple jump champion Teddy Tamgho has been hospitalised after fracturing his shin during training on Wednesday, his agent told AFP.

"He has a fracture of the left tibia, that's sure, but the fibula is not affected," explained Ludovic Ollière after speaking to the athlete who has been hospitalised in Paris.

"Teddy has a bar in the tibia from a previous injury. And it is because of this bar that the fibula has not been affected," he said.

The 24-year-old picked up the injury after a series of practice jumps and "there was fatigue involved," explained Ollière.

The winter season is now over for Tamgho who had planned to take part in the world indoor championships in Sopot next March as he undergoes tests to determine the seriousness of the injury.

"Teddy is strong mentally, he's not defeated. We will not say that it's as if nothing happened, but he has already shown that he has a strong mind," added Ollière.

Earlier, the French team's national technical director Ghani Yalouz told AFP that the athlete had been taken to the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris.

"We can fear anything, including a break. I'm shocked, but he has already bounced back and with courage and determination he'll do it again. We're not going to cry before it hurts," said Yalouz.

The Frenchman skipped the entire indoor season this year to concentrate on his preparations for the worlds in Moscow, having had to sit out competition for 20 months.

He had undergone surgery on the right ankle he fractured in July 2011 warming up for the European under-23 Championships and a subsequent bone growth.

He claimed the world title in Moscow and achieved the third best performance of all time with 18.04 metres.
