Missing email could be found, school sex inquiry told

A school sex inquiry in South Australia has heard a vital email previously thought to have been deleted could be tracked down.

The crucial email which could have alerted then Education Minister Jay Weatherill and others to the rape of a seven-year old girl at a western suburbs school was considered by some to be lost forever.

It was deleted, but not before being passed on to a mystery recipient who has never come forward.

Telstra officials today told the inquiry they can hunt down where the email went, which could help explain why school parents were not informed about the rape.

But that search needs the okay from the premier.

Chairman Robert Brokenshire said the committee would be writing to Jay Weatherill and requesting his approval for Telstra to scan through emails.

In another development, the inquiry was told former deputy education chief Gino Degennaro met with two ministerial advisors, including one who sent the crucial email just 15 minutes earlier, but even thought they knew about the rape, the advisors said nothing to Mr Degennaro.

These bungles led to most parents being kept in the dark for two years.
