Men get vasectomies in front of live audience

A group of men have had vasectomies performed in front of an audience and streamed live online around the world.

The scalpel and needle-free operation was broadcast live on the internet from Adelaide’s Science Exchange Centre.

To make things even more interesting, the surgeon performing the procedures also fielded questions from the live audience and viewers online.

Each procedure takes about 15 minutes with patients under local anesthetic.

Father of four, 39-year-old Chris Wiren was the first to get the snip by Florida surgeon and urologist Dr Doug Stein.

“I don’t feel any less of a man, no my voice hasn’t gone up higher, it’s all fine” Mr Wiren said afterwards.

“And no, it didn’t hurt.”

The event is part of World Vasectomy Day, with the live audience factor coming from the Adelaide Festival of Ideas.

Oscar nominated and Emmy award winning filmmaker Jonathon Stack is the brainchild behind the idea as a way to address population growth and raise awareness of the role men can play in contraception.

Dr Stein whose mission is to ‘save the world one vasectomy at a time’ is credited with having performed more than 31,000 vasectomies around the world.
