A town in England has been left spooked after the mysterious appearance of a creepy clown, kitted out in full fancy dress.

The anonymous clown was reportedly first spotted in Northampton three days ago – Friday the 13th, reports Metro.

Dressed in full clown attire, with white face and red wig, it bears more than a passing resemblance to Pennywise the Clown in Stephen King’s chiller It.

It has also been reportedly spotted dangling a teddy bear.

The clown has become something of a minor celebrity in the town and even has its own Facebook page – Spot Northampton’s Clown.

It is not known who is updating the Facebook page but pictures of the clown have been posted.

The ‘clown’ has also posted messages to social media.

"Too much hate not enough love . No, i don’t have a knife on me!, thats just stupid rumours spread by stupid people," he wrote.

"To prove i’m real to all the lovers and doubters, i’ll see you in town today. Keep those eyes peeled."

Some residents have been left baffled, others terrified.

One wrote: 'I think this guys entertaining hes only trying to cheer a sad old town up keep it up m8 i think your great as long as you dont harm any one go for it!'

Another user wrote: ‘Seriously what’s this thing about a clown in Northampton standing outside houses with balloons #scared #northamptonclown'
