Snake season starts in south east Queensland

Unseasonally hot temperatures, coupled with breeding season means snakes are on the move in south east Queensland.

Licenced snake catcher Simon Grainger, who lives in Manly, told News Corp locals can expect more snake sightings as the mercury continues to soar.

"Most people just find out what (breed) it is and then leave it alone," he said.

"That is the best thing.

"But most of the time they can be removed by licensed catchers if they are causing a problem in your home.

"(The heat) coinciding with breeding season means they are on the move and looking for mates.

"They travel between houses."

Carpet pythons are one of the most commonly sighted reptiles during breeding season, and Mr Grainger warns of the dangers they pose to pets such as chickens and dogs.

"They have the potential," he said.

"The majority of them eat rats, possums and flying foxes but domestic animals have been taken in the past.

"But it's not a common occurrence."
